There is really nothing unique about this application...merely, a replacement of older, hardwired components...relays with a relay replacer...a PLC. In this case, it was the Smart-PAK PLUS.
The facility utilizes two artificial wetlands as the final treatment of the effluents before discharging into the environment. An electromechanical relay control panel was originally installed to allow one cell to fill while the other was pumped out.
The panel was plagued by numerous problems and could not be relied on to switch over the cells. Our customer's research determined that a PLC based system would provide the proper sequencing of the system with the added advantage of being able to record run times and pump starts.
This data will allow the facility operators to track system cycling and plan for preventive maintenance on the system hardware. As with any municipal facility cost is always a consideration. After researching various PLC's on the market, our customer selected the Entertron Smart Pack Plus. This unit had the necessary I/O for the project and easily fit into our very tight project budget. An added plus, as stated by our customer, was the free programming software and support provided by Entertron.
