Why use a Smart Relay when you can use a Smart-PAK?

What you typically find with a "smart relay" in comparison to a PLC is a stripped down version with some basic programming functions, limited program and internal memory capacity and a couple of bells (analog inputs). For those who require analog I/O, we offer the Smart-PAK PLUS. For really basic applications requiring only digital I/O we offer the Smart-PAK and Smart-PAK-e. What is the Smart-PAK-e? More about that later.

Smart relays come with or without integrated LCD displays and function keys used for programming. However, our emphasis is on the units provided without display or keypad for embedded OEM applications. Should you require an inexpensive display, we will be addressing that later in this presentation.

Entertron is offering a fully functional product, with different options at a price that makes sense. You will notice that not all smart relays offer the same capabilities. For instance, if you need some level of communications, a rather expensive protocol module is required.

In case your wondering...the Smart-PAK is not new...it has been around since 1992. Since it's introduction, we have continually improved the product. Even with the advent of "smart relays", the Smart-PAK still offers more for less.

Are you in need of an inexpensive operator interface?

Sure, the smart relays offer an integrated display, however, that display can also be used to program the unit. Do you want to create the possibility for your customer to access your program? When using the Smart-PAK, the display is separate from the PLC and its program, therefore you never need to worry about someone accessing your program. Our friends at Optimation offer some nice inexpensive operator interfaces.

On a side note, you may be pondering...what about a DL-05 from Automation Direct? The digital inputs are certainly comparable as is the built in power supply. However, should you require a real time clock, you will require their D0-01MC module. Their lowest price controller with module starts at $148.00 and is not expandible. This doesn't include software or cables.

Some have asked us about Tri PLCs E-10-Relay unit. They are inexpensive, however you are limited to a minimal number of rungs of code; a few timers and counters and a 2 amp relay output rating.
